Federal investigators discovered over 150 homemade explosive devices during a raid on a Virginia farm - marking the largest seizure of completed explosives in FBI history, according to court documents filed this week.
Brad Spafford, 36, was arrested on December 17 at his 20-acre property in Isle of Wight County after authorities executed a search warrant. The initial arrest was for possession of an unregistered short-barrel rifle, though additional charges are expected.
During the search, FBI agents found what they described as pipe bombs scattered throughout the property. The majority were stored in a detached garage and sorted by color, with some labeled as "lethal." Several devices were preloaded into what appeared to be a wearable vest.
Investigators also discovered a jar of HMTD, a highly unstable explosive compound, stored in a freezer next to food items. The jar was labeled "dangerous" and "do not touch." HMTD is so volatile it can detonate from simple temperature changes or friction.
The investigation began in early 2023 after Spafford's neighbor reported his weapons stockpiling to authorities. Court documents reveal Spafford had previously lost three fingers while handling explosive materials but continued making devices afterward.
Prosecutors argue Spafford poses "an extreme danger to the community" and should remain in custody. They noted concerning behavior, including using photos of President Biden for target practice and expressing extremist views.
Defense attorneys counter that Spafford has no criminal record and poses no threat, describing him as "a hard-working family man." While a judge ordered his release with electronic monitoring, that decision is currently on hold as prosecutors appeal.
The case remains under investigation by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force. Spafford faces federal charges related to the unregistered firearm, with additional charges likely as the investigation continues.
