A 26-year-old software developer was arrested Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week.
Luigi Mangione was taken into custody at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee recognized him from wanted posters and alerted authorities. Police found him carrying a ghost gun, silencer, and multiple forms of identification, including fake IDs.
According to police officials, Mangione was in possession of a three-page handwritten document expressing grievances against the U.S. healthcare system and corporate America. The document is believed to outline the suspect's potential motives.
Mangione, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in computer science, worked as a data engineer at TrueCar until 2023. He was valedictorian at Baltimore's prestigious Gilman School and comes from a prominent Maryland family with business interests in country clubs and nursing homes.
Investigators discovered concerning online activity, including Mangione's positive review of the Unabomber manifesto on Goodreads, where he wrote that "violence is necessary to survive" when other forms of communication fail.
Thompson was shot three times outside the Hilton Midtown in New York City. The suspect was last seen at Port Authority bus station before being spotted in Pennsylvania. While Mangione has been arrested on firearms charges, police have not yet formally charged him with Thompson's murder.
The arrest came as a surprise to investigators, who said Mangione was not previously on their radar as a suspect. The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to establish definitive links between the suspect and the shooting.
