VMware Workstation users are encountering issues with the software's automatic update functionality following Broadcom's recent changes to download URLs. The problem stems from Broadcom redirecting the update server address to its general support page, resulting in certificate validation errors.
When users attempt to check for updates through the built-in update mechanism, either at startup or manually via the Help menu, they receive an error message stating: "A certificate error occurred while connecting to the update server. Check your Internet settings or contact your system administrator."
The issue appears to have started on March 24 and affects both VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion Pro users. While the core software continues to function normally, the broken update system forces users to manually download and install updates from Broadcom's support portal.
This unannounced change has sparked frustration among customers who previously relied on seamless automatic updates. Without functioning auto-updates, users may potentially miss critical bug fixes and security patches unless they regularly check Broadcom's website for new versions.
A Broadcom employee noted in the Fusion community that the company has implemented changes to their software update infrastructure. However, Broadcom has not yet issued an official statement addressing the situation or provided a timeline for resolving the certificate errors.
The problem persists in VMware Workstation version 17.6.3, the latest release of the software. Users seeking updates must now visit Broadcom's support website directly to download and install new versions manually.
This development follows a pattern of controversial changes implemented by Broadcom since its acquisition of VMware, including modifications to product offerings and pricing structures that have drawn criticism from the user community.
