A new initiative in Amsterdam aims to breathe new life into old laptops through free Linux installation workshops. Starting this April, Repair Café International will host three Linux Repair Café sessions at the OBA Maakplaats on Javaplein in Amsterdam-East.

The timing is particularly relevant as Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 10 in October 2024. According to Canalys Research, this could potentially turn around 240 million devices - approximately 20% of all Windows PCs - into electronic waste.

The Linux Repair Café offers an environmentally conscious alternative by helping people transition to Linux, an open-source operating system that can run effectively on older hardware. Linux experts will be available to demonstrate the system, answer questions, and assist with installations.

Participants can:

  • Test Linux on demo laptops
  • Get hands-on guidance from Linux specialists
  • Have Linux installed on their own laptops
  • Learn about sustainable technology options
  • Donate unused laptops to be refurbished for those in need

The sessions will take place on three consecutive Saturdays - April 5, 12, and 19, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Visitors planning to have Linux installed on their laptops should back up important files beforehand, as the installation process will erase existing data.

"Many people hesitate to switch to Linux because it's slightly different from what they're used to," explains the organizer. "However, Linux computers can handle all common tasks like web browsing, email, and word processing while extending the useful life of older hardware."

The initiative aligns with growing environmental concerns about electronic waste and offers a practical solution for sustainable computing. The Linux Repair Café welcomes anyone interested in giving their old laptops a second chance.
