German prosecutors have brought espionage charges against three Russian-German dual citizens accused of working as agents for Russian intelligence services. The suspects, identified as Dieter S., Alexander J., and Alex D., allegedly gathered sensitive military information and planned sabotage operations within Germany.
According to Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office, Dieter S., the main suspect, maintained contact with a Russian intelligence operative while also serving as a fighter in an armed unit of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) in eastern Ukraine. Starting in October 2023, he allegedly discussed potential sabotage targets in Germany that would disrupt military aid to Ukraine.
The prosecution alleges that Dieter S. scouted various strategic locations in Bavaria, including U.S. military installations, a military cargo loading facility, and an industrial manufacturing site. He reportedly photographed and recorded video of military transports and equipment, later transmitting this intelligence to his Russian handler.
Prosecutors say Alexander J. and Alex D. joined the operation by March 2024, assisting Dieter S. in gathering intelligence. The group allegedly planned explosive attacks and arson targeting military infrastructure, industrial facilities, and railway lines used for transporting military supplies.
This case emerges amid a series of recent espionage arrests in Germany. Authorities have also detained suspects accused of spying for China and Turkey, highlighting growing concerns about foreign intelligence activities on German soil.
The charges against the three Russian-German nationals underscore the ongoing tensions between Germany and Russia, particularly in the context of Germany's support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. If convicted, the suspects face substantial prison terms under German law.
The Federal Prosecutor's Office emphasizes that these alleged activities posed a direct threat to German national security and the country's military support capabilities for Ukraine.
