These changes, according to the council, place an "unreasonable burden" on users while particularly affecting vulnerable communities.
Recent modifications to Meta's platforms include rolling back fact-checking systems, eliminating company-wide DEI policies, and reintroducing political content for US users. The council warns these alterations risk dismantling established safeguards that protect users, especially women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and immigrant communities from online harassment.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the company's shift toward community-driven moderation during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Podcast, claiming the timing wasn't politically motivated. However, he made controversial statements comparing platform censorship under the Biden administration to George Orwell's "1984."
The council has proposed several recommendations, including enhanced partnerships with youth organizations, mental health services, and trusted third-party entities to maintain platform safety.
During a recent earnings call, Zuckerberg indicated 2025 would mark a pivotal year for reshaping Meta's governmental relationships, expressing optimism about an administration that "prioritizes American technology winning."
