New Drink-Spiking Detection Device Could Transform Nightlife Safety

Scientists at the University of British Columbia have created an innovative stir stick that can detect common date-rape drugs in beverages within 30 seconds. The device, named Spikeless, aims to prevent drink spiking and sexual assaults in bars, clubs, and restaurants.

The stir stick features a paper body with a specialized bioplastic tip coated in chemicals that change color when exposed to drugs like ketamine and GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) - substances that are otherwise impossible to detect due to being tasteless and odorless.

Dr. Johan Foster, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering at UBC, developed Spikeless over 15 years, with intensive work on the prototype occurring in the last three years. The team focused on creating a simple, accurate, and scalable solution.

Unlike existing detection methods like cups, coasters, and nail polish that require active testing or contaminate drinks, Spikeless offers a discreet and non-contaminating approach. The inventors aim to make the device widely available at venues rather than placing responsibility on potential victims.

"Instead of me trying to sell it to you, or a consumer, why can't we make venues safer?" said Foster, emphasizing the goal of mass production at an affordable price point.

Anti-violence activist Sasha Santos, who advised on the project, highlights how Spikeless could benefit businesses: "As a business, to say 'this business is Spikeless, you're safe here,' that's pretty major."

The development comes as police across Canada report increasing incidents of drink spiking, with RCMP in Nanaimo recently launching a public awareness campaign following multiple reports at nightclubs.

The UBC team is currently preparing for real-world testing and seeking Health Canada approval. They have launched a startup to scale production and commercialize Spikeless, aiming to make it universally accessible at bars, clubs, parties, and festivals.
